Kantha is still the most popular form of embroidery practiced by rural women in India. Traditionally it was used to sew old saris together to make simple quilts and bedspreads. Contemporary Kantha embroidery is commonly used in bedding and other furnishing fabrics, mostly using cotton and silk. In the best examples, the entire cloth is covered with running stitches, giving the cloth a slight wrinkled, wavy effect. This gives the bedspread its unique texture and distinctive appearance.
